The self defeating artist, I have been one. But, not as bad as people with tens of thousands of student loans to Art Colleges have been. They put their work where fans cannot buy. Last time I checked you can't buy anything on Instagram nor Tumblr. Yet people I know constantly show their work on these platforms for an ego boost.
The reason why broke painters stay broke and rely on their parents for every single stinking expense?
They aspire to show their work beside Priceless National Treasures. Pretty self defeating isn't it. If a patron is going in with the "Browsing" mindset. Nothing much is going to change his mind.
People don't browse grocery stores.
National Enquirer and their headlines are the best publication that knows this fact.
People go to Grocery stores to buy anything that meets there eye.
Casinos are great, they even give you a Free Lunch for spending your whole paycheque at the tables. Only then do you earn the Free Lunch.
